National Building Research Organization (NBRO) under the Ministry of Disaster Management in Sri Lanka conduced a landslide hazard zonation mapping in ten districts of hill country areas since1989 at scales of 1:50000 and 1:10000. Real time data are gathered from a network of pluviometers installed in 50 communities. The aim of the system is to alert people, living in vulnerable communities during heavy rainfall, at timely evacuations as planned and practiced. The Disaster Management Centre is responsible for coordinating and disseminating the warnings to the relevant technical agencies and to the public. Early warning messages are based on the level of warning issued (yellow or amber). Since September 2011, warnings are issued and published on the web site www.nbro.gov.lk.
